Evaluative Report - Walthamstow E17

Our group was given to research on the E17 Walthamstow area. Our responsible area is massive and it is furthers from the central London among all the other areas. So what we did was splitting up the E17 area into four parts, then we were researching on one of those four areas in pairs, as this would save lots of time.

Fion and I were in charge on the research on the North East part of the E17 area. This is east from the Chingford Road, and north from the Forest Road. Before we go there, I was researching about the Walthamstow area on the internet. This has given me a little bit information on what sort of area are we going to visit, and how to get there. When we got there, we went and bought a map pf the local area, so we would know where have we been, and we can mark the places of interest onto the map. Even thought Fion and I were only exploring the North East part of the E17 area, however this took us more than 3 hours to just walk through the streets in order to find some interesting things. We have come across a tiny art shop on the way, and we have visited places like the “Public Bath”, which is actually a public swimming pool, the Town Hall, the Assembly Hall. The staffs inside the town hall were really helpful, they have given us some information on the Walthamstow area.

After researching the Walthamstow area, all the group members has uploaded the photos that they have taken onto the internet, so we can all get access to all of the photos whenever we needed them. It was also interesting to look at the photos of the other areas that rest of the group members had visited.

During the process of creating the game, we had quite a few group meetings. We were trying to make our game challenging, however some of us thought that would be too difficult. Besides, quite a few members liked their own idea so much that they thought their idea must be used. So we had problems to decide whose idea to use and what should be in the game, everyone’s ideas are different. I was trying to explain how we could combine them, but some of the members insisted on what they want. Finally, we have tried our best to include most of the ideas in the game, and made the game in various difficulties. I was in charge of creating an anagram for a statue near the town hall, and I found that quite difficult, as my first language is not English. I believe that it would be quite difficult to play our group’s game, as we have made some of the clues quite tricky.

This group project did get us to know more about each other, and more about the place, as well as how to work as a team and listen to the others.

However, what was not ideal for the scavenger hunt was the time that we were given to play the game. We have all started the game at the afternoon; it gets dark very early as it is winter now. It is kind of dangerous for some groups to visit some of the places, especially if they have decided to slit up.

If I was given another chance to remake the whole scavenger hunt game, I would improve on the presentation of the clues. For example, putting the clues in order, I think this would help the players. As they would know the correct route of the game, rather than keep going back to the same spot, especially when the area is huge. They would just get fed up, if they were going back to the same place again and again. In additional, I think adding a little bit of colors on to the photo would make the photographs more interesting, and the players would have more interests in playing the scavenger hunt.
